Il nome della città deriva dal latino "Limem" ovvero confine. Raggiungibile esclusivamente via monti o lago, basava la propria economia sulla pesca e sulla coltivazione di olivi e limoni. Venne finalmente collegata ai paesi limitrofi nel 1932 allorchè fu terminata la caratteristica strada Gardesana Occidentale e finirono così anni di isolamento e di confine. L'economia locale iniziò a trasformarsi nell'immediato dopoguerra, grazie all'afflusso dei primi turisti provenienti dalle regioni del Nord Europa. Gli abitanti di Limone iniziarono così a piccoli passi un costante sviluppo, trasformando il piccolo paese di pescatori nell'odierno centro turistico fra i più impostanti del Lago di Garda. La fama di Limone aumentò considerevolmente nel 1979 data della scoperta della APOLIPOPROTEINA A-1 MILANO GENE LIMONE. Nach den Weltkriegen begann der Fremdenverkehr. Die Einwohner fingen nun an das kleine Fischerdörfchen in einen Fremdenverkehrsort umzuwandeln, und nun ist er einer der wichtigsten hier am Gardasee. Limone wurde 1979 mit der Entdeckung des APOLIPOPROTEINS A-1 MILANO richtig berühmt.
